It’s a one week pause until next Monday. The order extending the stay came from Justice Samuel Alito.
Here’s what the media is saying:
A panel of three Federal judges ruled in December 2021 that the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistring Commission (MICRC) had diluted Black voting power in violation of the Voting Rights Act by predominantly drawing several voting districts.
The court ordered to complete the new maps for seven stat House districts by February 2 this year, so they can undergo public comment and be in effect for the 2024 election.
The MICRC appealed the decision to the US Supreme Court requesting a stay on the order to redraw the maps. The Supreme Court rejected this request in January this year which means the MICRC must continue the redrawing process. The new map must be submitted by March 1, 2024, after public comments. The six state Senate maps must be redrawn ahead of the 2026 election.
The areas subject to the redraw are: The Grosse Pointe and St Clair Shore suburbs, Downriver Detroit and parts of Oakland and Macomb counties. The six State Senate maps must be redrawn ahead of the 2026 election
House districts that must be redrawn: 1, 2, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14
Senate districts that must be redrawn: 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 10 and 11
